It is distinguished by having only scales in its body wall and tentacles (Group C), a dichotomously branching main stem with a 1/4R branching sequence, and uniquely shaped tentacular sclerites. Based on an extrapolation of the height (and thus age) of the colony and the number of concentric axial lamellae, it was determined that one lamella is secreted approximately every 43 days, not on an annual basis as in tropical species that have been examined.}, keywords = {Chrysogorgiidae}, author = {Cairns, S. One species is described as new (C. herdendorfi), three species are synonymized (C. orientalis, C. affinis, C. elisabethae), and two species are elevated in rank from variety to species (C. multiflora and C. thyrsiformis). Lectotypes are chosen for six of the species and a neotype for one, C. desbonni, the type species of the genus. A type species is also designated for the genus Dasygorgia, a junior synonym of Chrysogorgia. An identification key to the nine species is given, as well as a list of the 59 currently recognized species in the genus, along with their type locality, depth of capture, and branching sequence. The study was based on newly reported specimens from over 150 deep-water stations as well as re-examination of all historical material; additional records of C. squamata and C. spiculosa represent the first reports of these species since their original description in 1883.}, keywords = {Chrysogorgiidae}, author = {Cairns, S. Directly under the "halo/aureola/circle" of "tentacles/feelers", the "armor" of the lengthwise positioned sclerites breaks up into 8 distinct "strands/cords", made up of the conserved lengthwise distributed spicules. In this section of "autozoids (I can{\textquoteright}t find this word in any dictionary)", the sclerites take on a somewhat applanate (horizontally flattened) form. In each of these "strands/cords", these spicules lie in 5-6 rows in the proximal part and in 3-4 rows in the distal part. The farther "strands/cords" "cross/go over" onto the dorsal side of the "feelers/tentacles". But here remains only two rows of sclerites. The last ones become even more horizontally flattened, but their "skin/surface" is more granular and with more clearly expressed "conical/tapered" "papillae/eminences/buds/tubercules".
